We have come to the end of the group stages of our lunch time soccer competition. Final tables were:

This means that Spain will play Belgium Tuesday 6th October in one semi-final. Looking forward to this game as these two are the only unbeaten teams so far. England plays Norway Wednesday 7th October in the other semi-final, with the Final played Wednesday 14th October.

Highlights and Controversies

*Wilton’s ‘glut’ sinks Argentina

*Cooper’s first kick from the kick off against Switzerland hits the crossbar and the goal line before being saved.

*Jordyn uses his derriere perfectly to defend a free kick.

*Spain’s captain, and favourite for the BSC Ballon d’Or, was on a one game loan to France and then red carded.

*Talking about red cards, referee, Mr. Johnson has become well known for dolling them out.

*With the non-appearance of Norway’s Erling Haaland, Kaelan has been a worthy late call-up.

*Belgium beat tournament favourites in the last game.

*The, at times, raucous support, has been terrific as has been the sportsmanship shown by all students. The weather has been kind meaning we don’t have any postponed games and the support given by students and teachers has been great.

Market Day 

Market Day 2.0 took place on a wet, windy and cold afternoon in the Year 8 and 9 Hub. 

Staff and students enjoyed a selection of delicious milkshakes, yummy pavlova, sensational slices, cakes, cookies and brownies and warm toasties and sausages.

35 Years of Service Awarded to Lynette Solomon-Dent

Bairnsdale Secondary College staff member Lynnette Solomon-Dent was recently recognised for 35 years of service in Education as a teacher across Gippsland starting out in Morwell. The Department of Education, Regional Director Ian Burrage presented the award to Lynnette. 

Lynnette’s Principal at Wollum Bellum school in Morwell (2012) was Matthew Snell, who attended the award ceremony alongside Hugh Pepper and Tony Roberts. 

Lynne has been a Koorie Engagement Support Officer (KESO) in East Gippsland working alongside Hugh Pepper (Dooka). Lynne taught Dooka and his family and many others across Gippsland over this time.

Lynne is now the Aboriginal Perspectives Leader at Bairnsdale Secondary College working with teachers in their classrooms.   Lynne consults with Grattan Mullett at GLaWAC through the cultural Hub which she did as KESO supporting schools.  Lynne has connected Bairnsdale Secondary College with Hugh Pepper. Hugh came to the College to talk at our Pride and Culture meeting about his new role at GLaWAC, including the supports and resources he has available. 

Lynne has family connections from Orbost, where she grew up and went to school, married and had children. She has family connections across Gippsland with GunaiKurnai peoples.

Lynne’s role in working with teachers is to embed Aboriginal perspectives utlising local resources. Lynne consults with Aboriginal staff at BSC and implements core documents including:

The outcome we want:

• Koorie children and learners of all ages are strong in their identity within all services
• All Victorians understand and respect Culture and History
