Training Walk Update

When we say "Rain, Hail or Shine" for iCan Challenge training, we mean it!

On Sunday 23rd November, a merry band of 40+ student and staff walkers headed off at 7.30am in the morning rain for an extended training walk. The weather conditions were not ideal with sporadic drizzle across our 4.5 hour session and track conditions were such that we had to improvise detours thanks to the flooded underpasses and sections near wetlands areas.

So what started as a planned 17km session eventually became a 20km session in what served as a lesson in resilience, problem solving and team-building encouragement. Knowing that Event Day will be a 50km session, there was not much to complain about for an opportunistic 20km walk. Just put one foot in front of the other until the job is done.

Students should be proud that they did not give up, that they pivoted with the adjusted plans and used the opportunity to really test out their socks and shoes under less than ideal conditions. If they can handle that, the 50km will be a walk in the park.

A massive shout out to the staff who gave up valuable Sunday downtime to volunteer to supervise the walk. Not all superheroes wear capes!

Practice Walk Tips

By now most walkers have established correct footwear, sun protection and clothing and are reminded that they will need the following items with them on the big day - so it's a good idea to practice carrying these things on their training walks:

  • Backpack

  • 1-2 litres of water (some walks may not allow for refilling)

  • Hat

  • Sunscreen

  • Sunglasses

  • Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes

  • Good socks

  • Snacks to refuel

  • Rain jacket/umbrella in case of bad weather (we will walk if it rains)

Sponsorship Tips

You've set up your profile page on the iCan Challenge page and now it's time to tell people and ask for sponsorship.

  • Share the link with family and friends and explain the goal and why you've decided to help raise $100,000

  • Donations can be big or small and all donations over $2 are tax deductible

  • Update people with your progress via your profile page! How did you go on your last training walk?

  • Remember to thank your sponsors for their donations
