Sacramental Program | Confirmation
The St Mary's College students participating in this year’s Sacramental Program through the Cathedral celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation during the 10.30am Mass on Sunday 24 May 2026. It was a joyful and reverent occasion for our parish and school community as the students publicly affirmed their faith and received the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
This special Mass, celebrated by Archbishop Anthony Ireland, took place on Pentecost Sunday, the feast when the Church remembers the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. Empowered with wisdom, courage and faith, the Apostles continued the mission and teachings of Jesus. In the same spirit, our students were encouraged to deepen their relationship with God and live out their faith in their daily lives.
Throughout the term, the candidates were prepared thoughtfully and enthusiastically by Mrs Rootes through classroom learning, prayer, reflection and participation in Sunday family sessions at the Cathedral. Their commitment and respectful involvement were evident throughout the program.
We sincerely thank Mrs Rootes, all parents and families for their ongoing encouragement and support of their children during this important stage of their faith journey.
Congratulations to our newly confirmed students: Mila Brown, Audrey Burgess, Dixie Rose Donovan, Evelyn Haddon-Cave, Daisy Holborrow, Lily Johnstone, Charlotte Krautz, Amelia Morris, Lucy Mulligan and Maya Tamlyn.
Community Engagement Meeting | Monday 1 June
Families and members of the College community are warmly invited to attend our first gathering of the Community Engagement Group on Monday 1 June at 5.00pm in the Student Resource Centre (Library).
This meeting provides a wonderful opportunity for parents, carers, staff and friends of the College to come together, strengthen connections and discuss ways we can continue to support and enrich our school community.
The Community Engagement Group will play an important role in fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment across the College through events, initiatives and opportunities for involvement throughout the year. Whether you are a long-standing member of the community or attending for the first time, everyone is encouraged to join us and share ideas in a relaxed and friendly setting.
We look forward to reflecting on recent activities, discussing upcoming events and exploring new ways families can become involved in College life. Your support and participation are greatly valued and contribute to the strong sense of community we enjoy at the College.
We hope to see many families there on Monday 1 June at 5.00pm in the SRC.
Rowing Awards Night | Monday 25 May
This week, I had the privilege of attending the Rowing Awards Night held in conjunction with St Virgil’s College. The evening was a chance to reflect on the achievements of the past rowing season and celebrate the dedication and success of our rowers, crews and age groups.

One of the highlights of the evening was presenting the prestigious Golden Oar Award to Ruby Wighton (Year 12, Rowing Captain). Ruby has represented St Mary’s College in rowing from the end of Year 6 through to Year 12, demonstrating exceptional commitment, leadership and passion for the sport. It was a truly special moment to acknowledge her outstanding contribution to the program.
On behalf of the College, I also reflected on the significant growth of rowing at SMC. The rowing season now extends between six and 12 months of the year and involved approximately 80 students last season, with participation expected to continue increasing.
I would like to sincerely thank all coaches, volunteer parents and carers for their ongoing support and dedication in ensuring our rowers enjoy a successful and rewarding experience. Congratulations also to our Junior Girls crew for winning the shield at the Head of the River this year. We look forward with excitement to the upcoming season ahead.
Many of our rowers are already involved in the Winter Training program, which is exciting leading into the season ahead. If you, or your daughter, are keen to find out more, please contact Mr Pinelli (apinelli@smc.tas.edu.au), our Rowing Coordinator, to see how she could contribute to SMC's success.
More details of the Rowing Program and the Awards Night can be found on the From the Sheds page of our newsletter.
