Celebrating Mary in May
During the month of May, our Junior School students have been celebrating Mary, the mother of Jesus, in many special and meaningful ways. May is traditionally known as the Month of Mary in the Catholic Church, and throughout this time, students have been learning more about Mary’s life and the important role she played in God’s story.
Through class discussions and prayer, they have explored Mary’s kindness, courage, faith and her willingness to care for others, while also reflecting on how they can show these same qualities in their own lives – at school, at home and in their friendships.
Students have also expressed their learning through a range of beautiful artworks created across the Junior School. From paintings and drawings to prayers and floral displays, these creations have helped transform our learning spaces into vibrant reminders of Mary’s love and care.

In Year 3, students have been exploring Marian icons and learning how artists throughout history have represented Mary. Inspired by this, they created their own icons, using watercolours to reflect the rich colours traditionally found in iconography, and outlining their work with permanent marker to complete the piece.

A particularly special part of our May celebrations has been our daily prayer at 12.00pm. When the Angelus Bell rings, students and staff pause to pray the Angelus, or the Hail Mary, in the Early Years. This daily moment of prayer offers everyone a chance to stop amid the busyness of the school day and remember Mary’s example of love, trust and service.

Vinnies Winter Appeal
Thank you to everyone who supported our Project Compassion campaign in Term 1. Thanks to your generosity, St Mary’s College raised a fantastic $2,739.10. These funds will help provide clean water, education, healthcare and opportunities for communities abroad experiencing poverty and injustice.
This term, our Social Justice group, Justice Action Network (JAN), is fundraising for the Vinnies Winter Appeal, which supports people in Tasmania who are experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness and poverty by assisting with food, bills and other essential needs.
Our first event was the Youth Market on Saturday 18 April, pictured here, where we sold art and accessories created by St Mary’s College students in an inspiring showcase of student creativity and generosity.

Our next event is the annual Quiz Night on Thursday 4 June (see Take Note for full event details).
