Year 2 News

Reading

In this fortnight, Year 2 students have been focusing on making text-to-text connections and text-to-self connections with a selection of books from the library and classroom. Students read at level texts and explored how they relate to the text using the sentence starter “this text reminds me of”.

To make text-to-text connections students read books that reminded them of other books they had read before.

Writing

Year 2 students have continued to engage in writing their narratives. They have been using their plans to draft their narratives and add details to make them more interesting. The Year 2 cohort has been attempting to include quotation marks in their narratives to show when characters are speaking. During the last fortnight students have continued to learn about conjunctions. They have been developing their understanding of using the conjunction ‘so’. Students can identify that the conjunction is used to show that one thing happens as a result of another.

Maths

Over the past two weeks in Maths, our Year 2 students have been working hard with three-digit numbers. They have created their own three-digit numbers and modelled them using MAB blocks to show hundreds, tens and ones. Students practised writing their numbers in words and placing them correctly on a number line, identifying the number before and after. They also explored patterns by finding 10 less and 10 more than a given number. To strengthen their understanding of number order, students worked on finding the number in between two numbers and identifying the number that is exactly in the middle. It has been wonderful to see their confidence growing as they work with larger numbers!

Inquiry

During the past fortnight, the Year 2 students have been exploring a variety of celebrations that families and communities participate in. Students wrote sentences about what their family celebrates and drew pictures to match their words. In another session students explored communities coming together during sporting events, particularly the Olympics. Year 2 students discovered that during the Olympics some people might celebrate the achievements of more than one community.

Social and Emotional Learning

Over the past two weeks in S.E.L., students have been learning about relaxation and how it helps our bodies and brains feel calm and ready to learn.

They explored different ways to relax, such as deep breathing and taking quiet moments, and discussed how these strategies can help us when they feel worried, upset or overwhelmed. Students also revisited the importance of whole body listening, focusing on using our eyes, ears, hands, feet and heart to show respect and attention. Students reflected on why it is important to always try their best, even when learning feels challenging. It has been wonderful to see them practising these skills in the classroom each day.
