Inquiry
In Inquiry, Year 1 students recently concluded their learning about Family Life. Last week, students also reflected on the important roles people play within their families and shared the responsibilities they have at home, such as helping with chores, caring for siblings or contributing to family routines. These conversations helped students understand that families work together in different ways to support one another.
The Year 1 Cohort has now begun a new Inquiry unit focused on making local and global connections. To introduce this topic, students have started learning about the connections that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have with Country and Place. They have been discussing the different ways people feel about sharing their special places and what makes a place meaningful to individuals and communities. Through class discussions and shared learning experiences, students are developing an understanding of the strong and respectful connections Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have with the land, sea, waterways, sky and animals of their Country. The class explored these ideas further through the story The Lost Girl, which helped students recognise how deeply connected people can be to the places that are important to them.

Social and Emotional Learning
In Social and Emotional Learning, Year 1 students have been focusing on Acts of Friendship and the importance of showing kindness to others. They have been learning to recognise the emotions of their classmates and discussing how people might feel when they are included in play or left out.
Through class discussions, students have explored ways to help everyone play well together, such as inviting others to join a game, sharing and taking turns. Students also shared stories of acts of kindness they have seen or experienced at school.
As part of this learning, students drew pictures showing themselves being kind to a classmate or family member. They also reflected on how it can feel to show kindness to others and how it feels when someone is kind to them. These activities are helping students build empathy and create a caring classroom community.
