Level 6

We are now halfway through our final year of primary school, and the Level 6 students continue to work hard, remain focused, and embrace the opportunities and challenges that come with their final year. It has been wonderful to see their growing independence, resilience, and willingness to challenge themselves across all areas of learning. The Level 6 teachers are incredibly proud of their efforts and the positive attitude they bring to the classroom each day.

Reading

In Reading, we have begun a whole-class novel study of How to Bee by Bren MacDibble. We started by learning about the author and exploring her other dystopian novel before building our vocabulary to support our understanding of the text. Students then developed their background knowledge by investigating the fascinating world of bees, moving beyond basic facts to explore their behaviours, roles within the hive, and importance to the environment. As we read the novel together, we are engaging in rich discussions about a range of literary elements, including character development, themes, setting, language choices, and the author's craft, while making connections between the text and our growing knowledge of the world.

Writing

In Writing, we have been revisiting narrative writing with a strong focus on the vital planning stage of the writing process. Students have been dedicating time to carefully develop their story ideas, thoughtfully considering their audience and the tone they want to create. They have also been planning their characters in depth, making purposeful choices about names that suit their stories rather than selecting random, silly, or familiar names. As part of this process, students are exploring the voice of both their narrative and their characters, thinking about how they can reveal personality through characters' actions, dialogue, and decisions, rather than simply describing their traits. 

Maths

In Mathematics, we have been developing our understanding of fractions by comparing and ordering fractions, adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators, and multiplying and dividing fractions. Students have been applying these skills to solve a range of worded problems, using appropriate operations and strategies to explain and justify their thinking. As we conclude this unit, students will consolidate their understanding by practising conversions between fractions, decimals, and percentages, strengthening their ability to recognise the relationships between these different representations of numbers.
