Level 5

Welcome back!

We are looking forward to another fantastic term with our Year 5 students. It is a privilege to watch them grow and learn each day. A warm welcome to Mrs Maxwell, who has joined the Level 5 teaching team, while Mr Mulder is currently Acting Assistant Principal.

Inquiry

This term in Inquiry, we are exploring Geography. Our guiding question is: “How are we connected to the world around us?”

Students have begun immersing themselves in this topic by investigating everyday products and discovering where they come from. This has sparked great curiosity about global connections and interdependence.

Reading

Students have begun our novel study of A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. Based on a true story, the novel follows a dual narrative, alternating between two characters living in different time periods in Sudan. Through this, students compare and contrast their experiences.

Students are engaging deeply with the text, analysing how the author uses dual perspectives, figurative language, and imagery to convey meaning and emotion. They are also exploring vocabulary choices and discussing the impact these have on the reader.

We have recently introduced Fluency Pairs into our reading program. Students work with a partner to read aloud, helping to build confidence, accuracy, and expression.

Writing

This term, we are focusing on the narrative genre. Students are generating ideas and learning how to refine them by focusing on one key concept in detail. They have begun drafting their narratives, using transitional language and revising their work to develop richer complications and include descriptive detail.

Maths

Students have been learning about fractions. To support your child at home, you may wish to revise:

  • Equivalent fractions
  • Comparing fractions (<, >)
  • Converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers
  • Adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator

An excellent resource for revising any 'How tos' for fractions is Maths Antics on YouTube.
