Understanding the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Assessments at Camden High School
As technology continues to evolve, Camden High School is committed to helping students develop the skills needed to use emerging technologies responsibly, ethically and effectively. One area that is becoming increasingly important is the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools such as NSWEduChat.
To support students and maintain academic integrity, all assessment tasks at Camden High School now include a Generative AI section on the assessment notification. This section clearly outlines the level of AI use that is permitted for that particular task and the requirements for acknowledging its use.
Why are we doing this?
AI is now a common tool in education, universities and workplaces. While AI can support learning, it is important that students continue to demonstrate their own understanding, skills and knowledge. Our approach ensures that assessment tasks remain authentic while also teaching students how to use AI appropriately and transparently.
The Five Levels of AI Use
Each assessment task will identify one of the following levels:
Level 1 – No AI AI use is not permitted for the assessment task.
Level 2 – AI Assists with Editing Students may use AI to support editing, including checking spelling, grammar and proofreading. Students must include a brief acknowledgement of this use.
Level 3 – AI Assists with Ideas and Planning Students may use AI to brainstorm ideas, plan projects or assist with structuring their response. Students must include an acknowledgement stating how AI was used.
Level 4 – AI Completes Part of the Final Task Students may use AI to generate a limited portion of the final product, such as a paragraph, table or summary. Students must provide an acknowledgement, in-text citation and full reference.
Level 5 – Full AI Use Students may use AI to generate the majority or entirety of the final product. Students must provide an acknowledgement, full reference and a copy of the prompt used to generate the content.
What AI Tool Should Students Use?
The NSW Department of Education's preferred AI tool for students is NSWEduChat, a secure and department-approved platform available through the Student Portal. Unlike many public AI tools, NSWEduChat has been designed specifically for educational use and encourages students to think critically rather than simply providing answers.
Academic Integrity Remains Essential
Students are reminded that all submitted work must remain their own. Any AI use must be acknowledged according to the requirements outlined on the assessment notification. Misuse of AI, failure to acknowledge its use, or using AI when it is prohibited may be considered malpractice and could result in penalties.
How Parents Can Help
Parents and carers can support their child by:
Discussing the responsible and ethical use of AI.
Encouraging students to use AI as a learning support rather than a shortcut.
Reminding students to follow the AI requirements listed on each assessment notification.
Encouraging students to verify information generated by AI and write responses in their own words.
By teaching students to use AI responsibly, we are preparing them for future learning and employment opportunities while maintaining high standards of academic integrity and achievement.
