Amazing 5/6

From the Teachers
What a fantastic start we’ve had to the 2026 school year! Term 1 in Years 5/6 has focused on building strong foundations, with students getting to know their new teachers, classmates, as well as the expectations and routines that will set them up for success.
We are incredibly grateful to our community of parents and carers for your ongoing support. Your efforts in ensuring students arrive at school on time, complete their homework, and feel supported through the many changes that come with Years 5/6 have made a meaningful difference.
From the Students - Term 1 Recap
Literacy
This term in Literacy we have been reading ‘The Callers’. An original novel by Kiah Thomas, this book was all about the life of a boy who feels different and is trying to figure out his true calling. After we finished reading the book, each 5/6 class made a comic book recapturing what we had read inside the book. We also wrote two more original chapters to add on to the final chapter. Throughout the term, we learnt how to properly revise and edit so that we could make our original stories flow along with the last chapter.

Numeracy
This week, the grade 6s have been learning about time. We have been exploring maths challenges, including timelines. Our teacher has given us some challenging tasks that were difficult but fun. We had to calculate the sum of different time frames and solve some interesting problems. We used Google Maps to find out how long to travel from different places in Australia, for example, we did from Le Page Primary School to Melbourne Zoo (approximately 40 minutes)
The grade 5s have been learning about area and perimeter. We used trundle wheels to find the area and perimeter of places around the school, such as the chicken coop, art room, shade sails and chessboard. The formulas we used were L x W = Area, and (L + W) x 2 = Perimeter.

Inquiry
This term in Inquiry, the 5/6s learned about colonisation. We learned how Captain Cook landed at Botany Bay in 1770. Later, the First Fleet arrived and established a settlement. We also learnt about the Inca people and their beliefs. The Inca people believed they were summoned by the sun god and were born from a cave. The Inca Empire started as just four brothers and four sisters, but soon they were one of the biggest empires in South America.

Art
This term in Art we made papier-mache inspired by Salvador Dali. His art was used to design the famous Chupa Chups lollipop wrappers. He was also a famous artist, well known for his dream-like paintings. The papier-mache we made were surreal animals. We took two different animals and added the features of each to make our own unique papier-mache. I made a fish with yellow and black stripes and I added bee wings. Some other ideas were a panda with octopus legs and a fish with jellyfish legs. We learnt about Salvador Dali and his amazing work. Next term, I'm looking forward to learning about a new artist.

Sport
In sport this term, the 5/6s had Interschool sport. We got to choose from 3 sports: Tennis, Volleyball, or Teeball. In interschool sports, every Friday we play against different schools. If we won most of our matches, we would go into the Pool A group at the Lightning Premiership at the end of term. On Lightning Premiership day, we play against all the schools. If we beat all of the schools, we win our pool. If you have made it into Pool A and you win it, you go to the next round (which is called Division). If you win that round, then you will go on to Regionals, then State. It was a really fun day of sports. Thank you for reading, and have a good day.
