Fantastic 4

Term 1 Week 10

Year 4 Newsletter

Welcome to Week 10 of Term 1!

Literacy:

In Literacy, students planned and wrote their own narratives inspired by a remote island adventure, similar to Nim’s Island. Their prior learning helped to scaffold this process and supported them in building confidence as writers.

Students focused on describing characters and settings using interesting adjectives, while also developing creative and relevant problems and resolutions. They worked on building tension throughout their stories and created characters who showed growth and change as the narrative unfolded.

To support their writing, students used a checklist of key elements and were encouraged to “begin with the end in mind” when planning. Over the unit, they challenged themselves to grow as writers, and it was wonderful to read their finished stories.

Maths: In Year 4 Mathematics, students developed their knowledge and understanding of multiplication and division through the use of arrays and a variety of problem-solving strategies. Continued practice of multiplication tables at home is encouraged to further strengthen these skills. Along with revising all the skills they have learnt throughout the term

Inquiry

This term, students explored Australia’s history, focusing on the contact between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and others, including Europeans, and the impact of these interactions on people, cultures and the environment.

They investigated the journey of the First Fleet, sequenced key historical events, and considered different perspectives, including those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, convicts and settlers. This supported thoughtful discussions about how history can be understood in different ways.

Students asked questions, researched information, and practised distinguishing between facts and opinions, while building skills in sharing ideas respectfully. They also enjoyed presenting their learning by creating eye-catching and informative posters.

We hope you have an eggcellent easter and holidays. We look forward to seeing you in term 2!
