Term 3 Inquiry Focus
Science Inquiry Unit – Natural Systems (Foundation–Year 6)
This term, students will explore the exciting world of Natural Systems, developing an understanding that systems are made up of observable parts that work together to function as a whole. Through hands-on investigations and inquiry-based learning, students will discover how natural systems support life on Earth and how living things, Earth processes and space are interconnected.
They will also explore the important role people play within natural systems, understanding that we rely on these systems for our survival and that our everyday actions can have positive or negative impacts on the environment.
Foundation – Year 2
Students will develop their curiosity about the natural world by observing, describing and comparing living things and their environments. They will investigate the basic needs of plants and animals and explore how familiar objects and living things are part of simple systems. Through questioning, predicting, observing and sharing their ideas, students will begin to use scientific inquiry skills to make sense of the world around them.

- Science Inquiry – Asking questions, making observations, collecting evidence and communicating findings.
Years 3 – 6
Students will deepen their understanding of natural systems by investigating how plants and animals interact and depend on one another. They will explore concepts such as life cycles, ecosystems, adaptations and the interconnectedness of natural environments. They will also consider how human activities affect natural systems and investigate ways in which individuals and communities can contribute to environmental sustainability.

- Sustainability Cross-Curriculum Priority – Understanding human impacts on natural systems and exploring actions that support sustainable futures.
Through this unit, students will build scientific knowledge, strengthen their inquiry skills and develop an appreciation of the complex natural systems that make life on Earth possible.
