Year 12 Psychology – Integrated Pathology Lab Excursion

Our Year 12 Psychology students recently attended the Integrated Pathology Lab in Brisbane for an immersive and highly engaging learning experience.

Students began with an overview of the brain and various neurological pathologies before being provided with a real human biological specimen to examine. Working in small groups, they analysed their sample using guiding questions and later presented their findings to the class. The quality of their presentations was impressive, with students asking thoughtful, relevant questions that demonstrated genuine curiosity and deeper understanding.

Rebecca Lush, Curator of the Integrated Pathology Lab, facilitated the session with enthusiasm and professionalism. She skilfully prompted discussion and encouraged students to engage critically with the material. The class examined a range of authentic specimens, including examples of stroke, aneurysm, pork tapeworm infection, hydrocephalus, traumatic brain injury (“one punch can kill”), lobotomy, bacterial infections, and even a brain affected by Herpes Simplex Type 1 — commonly associated with cold sores.

The final component of the excursion involved rotating through a series of workstations featuring different body systems and conditions linked to psychological factors. Students examined specimens including a skull, stomach (with a bezoar linked to anxiety-related behaviours), heart, liver (alcohol-related cirrhosis), and lungs (smoking and discussion of “popcorn lung”). At each station, students were required to identify the condition and explain its relevance to psychology.

Our students represented the school exceptionally well. They were engaged, respectful, and inquisitive throughout the day, earning specific praise from Rebecca for their maturity and conduct.

We look forward to returning next year for another outstanding learning opportunity.
