Adventurous Journey Success at Wivenhoe Dam

From 8–11 January, 18 students successfully completed their Adventurous Journey at Wivenhoe Dam, taking on four days of paddling, exploration, and teamwork.

The journey began at Billies Bay, as students paddled through the eastern bays near Split Yard Creek Road and around in front of the Hydropower Station. The group continued past Turtle Cliffs before arriving at Captain Logan’s Camping Ground, where we were greeted by a rather large (See photo below) kangaroo near our campsite.

After setting up tents, students collected firewood and enjoyed a well-earned campfire, reflecting on the day’s achievements.

Day Two saw the group paddle along Captain Logan’s Creek toward the Brisbane Valley Highway before returning via Pelican Island. The scenery was spectacular, and students showed great persistence as they built their skills and confidence on the water.

Over the final two days, the group completed an impressive 40km paddle the full length of the dam to O’Shea’s Bridge near Somerset. It was a challenging but rewarding finish to the expedition.

Student Participation

Our Bronze Award students — Kaydin, Ellanore Cross, Torie Hickey, Benjamin Jardine, Kalti Masters-Woods, Tayla Porter and William Treadwell — embraced the challenge of their Adventurous Journey with enthusiasm and determination.

They were supported and encouraged by our Silver Award students — William Black, Angelika Brown, Kelsey Cowley, Jorden Hickey, Esta Kakakios, Victoria Thallon and Ben Wheeler — who demonstrated strong leadership and mentoring skills throughout the expedition.

Our Gold Award student, Elizabeth Thallon, led the team with confidence and maturity, setting a wonderful example for all participants.

A special thank you to our two fully completed Gold Award recipients, Hunter Masters-Woods and Charlie Humphreys, who generously volunteered their time to return as supporting canoeing instructors. Their guidance and expertise were greatly appreciated.

Throughout the journey, students demonstrated resilience, cooperation, and a positive attitude. Well done to all participants on a fantastic achievement!

Thanks to all the parents who helped with transport and Ms Arnold.

For their upcoming Qualifying Journeys, students will undertake either a cycling expedition along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail from Nanango to Toogoolawah or a canoeing journey through the Bribie Island Passage, travelling from Caloundra to the Bribie Island Bridge and return, under the guidance of Mr Harris and Ms Arnold.
