Hi Tarneit Rise Families,

Our drama learning continued throughout weeks 5 and 6, with students across the school putting their developing performance skills into practice. Students explored character, voice, movement, improvisation, puppetry and filmmaking while building their confidence in performing and collaborating with others. It was fantastic to see students applying the skills they had developed earlier in the term to increasingly complex drama activities and performances.

Prep students explored how actors created characters using facial expressions, body movements and voice. They experimented with changing the way they moved, spoke and reacted to portray different characters and emotions. In week 6, students began performing Goldilocks and the Three Bears, applying the acting skills they had developed throughout the term to bring the familiar characters and story to life.

Grade 1 students rehearsed their puppetry performances, focusing on changing their voices when speaking as their puppet and using their natural voices when performing as themselves. In week 6, students performed their puppet shows, presenting a clear conflict that the puppeteer and puppet had to work together to solve. Students demonstrated their developing skills in character voice, puppet manipulation and storytelling.

Grade 2 students worked collaboratively in groups to rehearse their hand puppet performances. They focused on using expressive character voices, controlling their puppets effectively and working together to tell a clear story. In week 6, students performed their completed hand puppet shows to the class, demonstrating their puppetry and performance skills for an audience.

Grade 3 students explored improvisation through the use of open scripts. In week 5, they interpreted scripts in different ways while focusing on acting skills, characterisation, setting, space and conflict. In week 6, students continued working with open scripts and incorporated costumes into their performances. They explored how costume choices could provide clues about a character and influence the way a scene was interpreted and performed.

Grade 4 students spent weeks 5 and 6 improvising and devising their own scenes with clear characters, settings and conflicts. They applied their acting skills to develop believable characters while considering how they could use the performance space effectively. Students worked collaboratively to develop their ideas and make choices that helped communicate their scenes clearly to an audience.

Grade 5 students used scripts to rehearse their short films, focusing on developing their characters and preparing their scenes for filming. They then began transforming their scripts into storyboards, planning appropriate camera angles and shot types to communicate their stories effectively on screen. In week 6, students moved from planning into production and began filming their short films, applying both their acting and filmmaking knowledge.

Grade 6 students spent weeks 5 and 6 developing their short film projects in greater depth. Using their scripts, they rehearsed scenes and refined their characterisation through purposeful choices in voice, facial expression, gesture and body movement. Students then translated their scripts into detailed storyboards, making considered decisions about camera angles, shot types and how these choices could enhance mood, character and storytelling. This planning prepared students for the filming stage of their short film projects.

It was wonderful to see students applying their drama skills with increasing confidence and independence. From Prep bringing familiar storybook characters to life to our senior students developing their own short films, weeks 5 and 6 provided many opportunities for creativity, collaboration and performance across Performing Arts.
