Grade 2 Community News
EMP (Explicit Maths Program)
Grade 2 students have continued to work hard during our explicit instruction sessions this week! In Mathematics, we have been focusing on the following areas: multiplication fluency, folding halves, quarters and eighths, and 3D objects. We have started practicing our multiplication fluency to build automaticity. We have also been learning to fold fractions and investigate and create 3D objects from simple nets.
Fact Fluency Practice
We also encourage students to jump onto Numbots and Times Tables Rock Stars at home to get some extra practice and strengthen their recall of number facts! Parents should have received their child’s log on details during their parent teacher interviews.
InitiaLit (Literacy)
Spelling!
Our Grade 2 students have continued to increase their knowledge of spelling rules this week. This week, we learned about compound words; a compound word is a word that is made up of two separate words, such as hairbrush, snowman, and cupcake. We have also learned about the prefix -re- meaning again, in words such as; replay!
In addition to our focus spelling rule, we also learned some new tricky words for us to practice: minutes, great, and these. We encourage students to keep practicing these tricky words at home whenever they get a chance!
Comprehension and Fluency!
During comprehension this week, we have built on our strategy of finding the main idea and have begun summarising! A summary gives us the most important information from a text in a short succinct way.
For our storybook sessions this week, we were introduced to a new text Zoo. Our three vocab words were: masses, impersonation and snarl. The students enjoyed seeing what learning about different perspectives of a trip to the zoo!
Growing Grammar!
In our grammar and writing lessons, our continued focus has been all about conjunctions. Students have been learning that conjunctions can allow us to write more informative and interesting sentences.
Handwriting
Grade 2 students have continued to refine their neatness and letter formation during our explicit handwriting lessons.
Humanities
In Humanities this week, we continued learning about Otzi the Ice Man. Students learned that Ötzi lived thousands of years ago, before modern tools and technology, and that scientists and anthropologists study his body and belongings to uncover clues about how he lived.
Respectful Relationships
For our Respectful Relationships session, our focus was on stress and what stress is. We described how stress can be felt in the body, situations that can make us stressed and strategies we can use to help us deal with stress.
Reminders
- Please ensure you are reading with your child every night. Students can borrow take-home books from their classroom libraries on their designated library days.
- Please make payment and give consent for our upcoming excursion to the Melbourne Museum. The learners are going to have so much fun!
- We encourage families to work together to get students to school on time. Classes start the day with morning circle time, and we would love all students to be at school by 8:45 am so they don’t miss out.
Continue to use Numbots and TimesTable Rock Stars at home. Logins were provided at Parent-Teacher interviews-please contact your child’s classroom teacher if you need a copy of their login details.
