Year Two

We are very happy to be partnering with you in 2026, and welcome your input:

When communicating with the Year Two team, please reach out via the below email addresses. Your child's class teacher is your first point of contact when requiring a discussion. You will usually see us outside the classrooms at the end of the day. This is the preferred time to catch us for a quick chat as we are focused on greeting the students before school.

Please also note that we have scheduled meetings at 3.45pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Term Two Overview

What a busy and exciting term we have had, filled with learning and memorable school events. Students enjoyed participating in a range of special occasions, including our Mother's Day afternoon, Crazy Sock and Hair Day, Auslan Day, Walk to School Day and Wear It Yellow Day. These events provided wonderful opportunities for students to connect with the school community and celebrate important causes.

Literacy

In Literacy, students worked hard to develop their ability to make connections while reading texts. We practised making Text-to-Self, Text-to-Text, and Text-to-World connections, helping students build a deeper understanding of what they were reading and make meaningful links to their own experiences and the wider world.

In Spelling, students were introduced to a range of more complex spelling rules and new tricky words. They also expanded their understanding of prefixes and suffixes, developing strategies to help them decode and spell unfamiliar words.

In Writing, students focused on creating engaging narratives. They explored the use of "Sizzling Starts" to capture their audience's attention and create interest from the very beginning of their stories. Students also worked on enhancing their sentence structure through the use of conjunctions. Using the acronyms FANBOYS and A WHITE BUS, they learned how to combine ideas effectively and create more sophisticated and varied sentences.

Paper Making

During our comprehension sessions, students read the informational text How to Make Paper. Following rich discussions and a strong interest in the paper-making process, Mrs Hobson brought in a paper-making kit, allowing students to experience the process firsthand. Students thoroughly enjoyed this hands-on activity, which was both engaging and enriching, bringing their learning to life.

Maths

Throughout Term Two, students consolidated their number skills through extensive practice with addition and subtraction, while also developing their understanding of fact families and fractions.

A highlight of Maths this term was our Skittles and jelly bean investigation. Students were given a container of jelly beans to sort by colour. They then tallied the total for each colour and presented their findings using a bar graph. This engaging activity supported students' learning in our Statistics and Data unit, while also providing opportunities to develop their skills in collecting, organising, and interpreting data.

Inquiry - Forest Park Homestead

Our Term Two Inquiry topic was Our Local History. Throughout the term, students explored how our local area has changed over time by examining artefacts, investigating changes in landscapes, and comparing past and present technologies.

A highlight of the unit was our excursion to the Forest Park Homestead in Upwey. Students learned about the history of this significant local landmark and discovered how it has been preserved as an important part of our community. They were particularly interested to learn that the historic homestead is now home to community radio station 3MDR, which has been broadcasting local news, music, and community information to the Dandenong Ranges and surrounding areas for many years. The incursion provided students with a meaningful connection to our local history and helped them appreciate the stories and experiences that have shaped our local area.
