St Francis of Assisi: A Saint for Our Times

This year, as we celebrate a special jubilee year honouring St Francis of Assisi, Catholics around the world are reflecting on the life and legacy of one of the most loved saints in Church history. More than 800 years after his life, St Francis continues to inspire people of all ages to live with compassion, humility, and faith.

Born into a wealthy family in Italy, Francis could have lived a comfortable and privileged life. Instead, he chose to follow Jesus in a radical way. After a profound conversion experience, he gave up his wealth and dedicated himself to serving God and helping those most in need.

One of the most important parts of Francis' life was his care for the poor. He spent time with people who were often ignored by society, including the sick, the homeless, and those living in poverty. Francis believed that every person was created and loved by God, and he challenged others to see the dignity and worth in every human being. His example reminds us that even small acts of kindness, generosity, and service can make a real difference in the lives of others.

St Francis is also remembered as a great promoter of peace. During a time of conflict and division, he encouraged reconciliation and understanding. His famous prayer begins with the words, "Lord, make me an instrument of your peace." Francis understood that peace starts with the choices we make each day, whether it is showing forgiveness, including someone who feels left out, or standing up against bullying and injustice.

Perhaps St Francis is best known today for his care for creation. He saw God's presence reflected in the beauty of the natural world and referred to the sun, moon, animals, and earth as his brothers and sisters. Francis taught that creation is a gift from God that should be respected and protected. His message is especially important today as we face environmental challenges and seek ways to care for our common home.

For young people in a Catholic school, the life of St Francis offers a powerful challenge: to be people who care for others, work for peace, and protect the world God has entrusted to us. By following his example, we can help build a more compassionate, just, and hopeful world.

As we celebrate this jubilee year, may St Francis inspire us to live our faith with courage, generosity, and love. His simple message remains as relevant today as ever: love God, serve others, seek peace, and care for creation.
