Year 6 News

Reading
This fortnight, Year 6 students have continued reading their class novel study of Two Wolves by Tristan Bancks. Students have been developing their vocabulary skills by identifying and unpacking difficult vocabulary, using context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words, and exploring how authors use descriptive and figurative language to create imagery and meaning.
We have also been revisiting the structure of narratives, identifying the rising action and complications, recognising the climax, and examining how stories reach their resolutions and outcomes. These skills have supported students in developing a deeper understanding of the novel and how authors build suspense and engage their readers.

Students have also been applying their persuasive writing skills to their Inquiry projects by planning, drafting, revising, editing and publishing their Shark Tank proposals. They have explored persuasive devices and language choices to create convincing proposals and are now practising their pitches in preparation for presenting their business ideas to the class.

This fortnight, Year 6 students have been exploring probability and data. Students investigated experimental probability and different types of events, developing their understanding of how likely or unlikely events are to occur. They also explored how data can be used to tell a story, considering the importance of sample size when collecting information and learning how to represent and compare data effectively. Students designed their own surveys, collected and analysed data, and practised interpreting information presented in a range of graphs and charts, including bar graphs and Venn diagrams. These activities have encouraged students to think critically about data and how it can be used to communicate information and draw conclusions.
