Year 3 News

Reading
In Reading, Year 3 students continued to build their comprehension skills through a range of engaging fiction texts. A key focus has been exploring character traits and thinking about what characters are like based on their actions, thoughts, feelings and decisions. Students have been learning to use evidence from the text to explain their ideas and make thoughtful observations about characters.
They have also been developing their ability to analyse stories by making connections between characters, events and important ideas. Through class discussions and written responses, students have been encouraged to share their thinking and support their answers with evidence from the texts they read.
Writing
In Writing, Year 3 students continued to develop their understanding of grammar. A key focus has been exploring the prefixes tri- and quad-, and understanding how they can be used to change the meaning of words.
In Genre Writing, students have been learning about the structure and key features of narratives. They have focused on creating engaging stories with a clear problem and solution, developing characters and events that help move the story forward. Students have also been working on organising their ideas into a clear beginning, middle and end, while using descriptive language to make their writing more interesting for the reader.
Maths
In Maths, Year 3 students have continued to develop their subtraction skills, focusing on solving larger numbers using a vertical subtraction strategy. Students have been learning what to do when there are not enough ones, tens or hundreds to take away. They have been practising exchanging from the next place value to help them complete the calculation, while building their confidence and accuracy. Students have also been encouraged to explain the steps they take and apply their subtraction skills to a variety of problems.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, Year 3 students have been learning about different habitats and the living things that depend on them. Students have been planning and beginning to build their own dioramas to represent a chosen habitat. They have been considering the features of their habitat, including the plants, animals and environmental conditions that help living things survive. Through this hands-on project, students are developing their understanding of habitats while using their creativity to bring their learning to life.
Social and Emotional Learning
Over the past fortnight, Year 3 students have had many opportunities to be creative, thoughtful and caring members of the school community. They created special cards for Father’s Day and their special people, taking the time to show appreciation for the important people in their lives.
Students also celebrated R U OK? Day, where students explored the importance of checking in with their friends and noticing when someone might need support. Students discussed ways they can ask, “Are you OK?”, listen to others and show kindness and care towards their classmates.

They had the opportunity to practise their skills using mannequins before working with a partner.
Melbourne Aquarium
Year 3 students had an exciting and memorable day exploring SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium! The excursion provided students with the opportunity to see a wide variety of marine animals up close and deepen their understanding of the habitats and environments in which they live.
Students were fascinated by the incredible range of sea life on display, including penguins, sharks, rays, colourful fish and other amazing creatures. As they explored the aquarium, students were able to make connections to their classroom learning and observe how different animals are adapted to survive in their environments. They also enjoyed discovering interesting facts and asking questions about the animals they encountered.
It was wonderful to see students showing curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the day. The excursion was a fantastic opportunity for students to learn beyond the classroom, share the experience with their classmates and develop a greater appreciation for the diverse marine life that exists in our oceans. It was certainly a day full of learning, wonder and plenty of memorable moments!
