Reading

During Reading, Foundation and Year 1 students revised how to make predictions and make text-to-self connections using the text ‘Our Class’. Students read the book together as a class and discussed what they thought might happen in the story. They also shared personal connections by relating the events and experiences in the book to their own lives.

Writing

In Writing, students continued developing their ability to expand sentences by using the words who, what, when and where. They also revised nouns, verbs and adjectives by constructing sentences orally before writing sentences that included all three word types. Students continued to develop their handwriting and letter formation skills through tracing, copying and independently writing letters and words.

Maths

In Maths, the students have been developing their understanding of statistics by collecting and recording data based on topics of interest to the class. They created bar charts to represent their data and practised interpreting the information by answering questions about what the charts showed, including identifying the most and least popular choices and comparing different categories.

Students have also been building their addition and subtraction skills. They have used number lines to solve and represent calculations and explored using MAB to support the split strategy. They have practised breaking numbers into parts to make calculations easier and have continued developing their understanding and use of the friends of 10 to support efficient mental strategies.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students have been learning about local habitats in Australia and exploring what animals need to survive in their environments. They investigated animal diets and learned about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores, identifying what different animals eat.

Students have also been exploring the human body by identifying different body parts and discussing what they are used for. They learned about the five senses and how these help people understand the world around them. To put their learning into practice, students participated in a sense hunt outside, using their senses to observe and investigate their surroundings.

During Social and Emotional Learning, students learned about using kind words and good manners when speaking to others. They explored how our words can affect how others feel and how using kind and respectful language can help everyone feel happy and included. Students also explored how boys and girls can have both similarities and differences in their likes and interests, such as favourite colours and sports. Students then drew pictures of things they like and shared their ideas with their peers.
