The Next Fortnight of Learning
Literacy
Recently, we wrapped up our study of The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan, exploring both the book and the short film. Students enjoyed discussing the key message of the story: that people can become so busy with their daily routines that they stop noticing the unusual, beautiful, and extraordinary things around them. It sparked some thoughtful conversations about being more aware of the world and the people around us.
We have now turned our attention to narrative writing. Students are working on developing engaging characters, creating interesting problems for their stories, and using descriptive language to bring their ideas to life. We have been focusing on ways to make writing more exciting and enjoyable for readers, and it has been great to see students becoming more confident and creative writers.
Although the end of the year is getting closer, there is still plenty to achieve. We are encouraging students to stay focused, continue giving their best effort, and make the most of every opportunity as we work towards a strong and successful finish to the year.
Mathematics
Our Mathematics learning has continued to focus on developing strong number sense and building fluency with core number skills. Students have worked hard throughout the year to improve their automatic recall of multiplication facts, and it has been fantastic to see the growth in both their speed and accuracy. These skills provide a strong foundation for future mathematical learning, and students should feel very confident heading into Year 7 with a solid understanding of times tables and number operations.
We are also nearing the end of our unit on the Cartesian Plane. This has been a highly enjoyable topic, with students using coordinates to locate, plot, and create a variety of designs and challenges. Many students have particularly enjoyed seeing how mathematical accuracy can be used to create pictures and patterns, making learning both engaging and rewarding.
As we move into the final weeks of the year, our focus will shift towards data and statistical investigations. Students will learn how to collect, organise, display, and interpret data using a range of graphs and representations. They will also investigate real-world questions, analyse results, and draw conclusions based on the information they gather. We are looking forward to exploring how mathematics helps us make sense of the world through data and informed decision-making.
Well Being and Respectful Relationships
Over the next few weeks we will be focussing on anti-racism and how it cannot be tolerated in our society. The damage that racism causes is profound and is something that needs to be completely eliminated. Casual comments that some people still think is ‘just a joke’ are a thing of the past and really stand out when we hear them. It’s up to all of us to be proactive in this area.
Graduation and Big Day Out
Please contact your classroom teacher or the office if your child will be absent for either graduation or Big Day out. This is pivotal for our planning of the day.
LOST PROPERTY
We currently have three Grade 6 jumpers in our possession that are looking for their owners! Could you please check whether your child has their jumper at home and follow up with us if they do? Thanks so much for your help in getting these back to their rightful owners!
Hot Chip Lunch
Hot chip lunch on November 20th! $6 for chips and juice box combo. Don’t forget to put your student’s order in!!
Nude Food
A quick reminder that Friday is Nude Food Friday! 🌿 Please remember to pack your child’s lunch and snacks in reusable containers rather than using plastic wrap or single-use packaging. Every little bit helps us reduce waste and look after our environment. Thank you for your support!
Have a great weekend and I hope that your $2 each way bet on the Melbourne Cup wins you back a small fortune!
