What's happening in our classroom?
Literacy
Year 4 students are continuing to read our class novel, Leo and Ralph, and loving the story so far! We are excited to continue exploring the story, learning more about the characters and find out what happens next.
In our sentence work, we have been learning about using dialogue in our writing. Using talking marks to show when a character is speaking, a speaker verb and a speaker tag to show who and how the character spoke.
In writing, we are continuing to write our own narrative texts. They are coming together so well so far, our students have shown excellent imagination and creativity. We look forward to bringing our imaginative stories to life!
Numeracy
Over the coming weeks, Year 4 students will be developing their multiplication and division skills, with a focus on dividing two- and three-digit numbers by one-digit numbers. We will use arrays and the written division algorithm to build our understanding and apply known division facts to solve problems.
Students will also learn to represent worded division problems using bar models to help visualise the information and identify the steps needed to find a solution. These activities will help build students’ confidence and strengthen their problem-solving skills.
In our upcoming Maths unit, students will explore probability and chance. They will learn to describe familiar everyday events using chance language, from impossible to certain. Students will then investigate chance events, such as tossing coins, rolling dice and selecting coloured balls, before comparing and ordering events from least likely to most likely. Through practical activities and discussions, students will develop their understanding of probability and how it relates to everyday life.
Inquiry
Properties of Materials, Term 4
In Science, students will explore the properties of natural and made materials, identifying and grouping materials found in everyday objects. They will investigate how properties such as strength, elasticity, conductivity, transparency and flexibility influence the ways materials are used in textiles, construction, technology and other products. Through practical experiments, students will compare materials and develop their understanding of sustainability by exploring concepts such as biodegradable, recyclable and non-recyclable materials, with a particular focus on the uses and environmental considerations of plastics.
Well-being
In Term 4 (Weeks 1-4), students will begin to explore help-seeking strategies as a part of our Respectful Relationships curriculum. They will participate in discussions, games and role plays. Students will discuss questions such as, ‘How big is the problem?’ and ‘Where can I get help?’. They will explore a variety of scenarios and make suggestions around appropriate help-seeking actions.
