We have been learning that the letter u can make the /yoo/ sound in words such as music and student. We have also been learning that ew can make the /yoo/ sound in words such as new and few.
In Week 4, we are learning the sounds /oo/ u-e and ue as in 'True Blue Ice-Cream' and 'Rude Noises'. We are learning to recognise these sounds in words such as rude, prune, June, fluke.
We have learnt the heart words: new, tissue and guy
Mentor Text: Jetty Jumping by Andrea Rowe
We have just started exploring the text Jetty Jumping by Andrea Rowe. The story follows Milla and her experiences at the jetty, where she watches, waits and eventually finds the courage to jump into the water.
Students have explored:
- Combining sentences – using the conjunction 'and' to join two short sentences together, such as “Milla sits and Milla stares.”
- The elements of a sentence – identifying the subject (who or what the sentence is about) and the verb (what the subject is doing or did) throughout the mentor text.
Interesting vocabulary we have explored from the text includes: jetty, leap, splash
Discussion questions for talking about this text at home with your child:
- Who is the main character in the story?
- Can you find two short sentences that could be joined using the word 'and'?
- Who or what is the subject in a sentence? What is the verb?
- How does Milla's confidence change throughout the story?

In Maths, students have been exploring addition and subtraction by partitioning two-digit numbers into tens and ones and representing their thinking using addition equations. They have also been practising adding and subtracting numbers on a number line to develop their understanding of number relationships. Students have been learning to identify and write number bonds and match addition equations to different ways of partitioning numbers.
Fluency Focus:
We continue to focus on building our understanding of numbers bonds to 20. You may wish to practise these facts at home with your child. For example: 0+20=20, 1+19=20, 2+18=20
Wellbeing: This Term we are looking at 'seeking help' and understanding how to ask for help. The Learning will focus on:
-Students being able to practise ways to seek help from adults.
-Students being able to practise ways to say what the problem is when they are seeking help.
