Connect: Year 2

Dear Grade 2 Families and Friends,
Despite the hot weather, the students did a great job being good sports and giving their best effort always during the Junior Athletics Day! We were very impressed with their enthusiasm and persistence!
We have a busy few weeks coming up with assessments as we start to make decisions around student growth for reports but look forward to an 'almost' long weekend coming up with Melbourne Cup Day Public Holiday on Tuesday 3rd November. If you plan to keep your child home on the Monday, could you please enter this on Sentral at your earliest convenience? This will help us with organisation and activities for the day Thanks!
Enjoy the next fortnight until the next newsletter,
Hailee, Emma, Dave and Andrew

Upcoming Learning
Literacy
Over the next few weeks in literacy, students will continue to consolidate their understanding of phonetic blends and spelling rules. We will also begin reading our new mentor text, The Snail and the Whale. Through the story, students will explore friendship, courage, curiosity and perseverance. They will discuss how someone who seems small can make a big difference and how the Snail and the Whale help each other. Students will also learn about different environments and ways we can care for our oceans and the world around us.
Numeracy
Over the next few weeks in maths students will learn how to solve word problems using bar models. They will use the CUBES strategy to help them understand what each problem is asking. Students will practise choosing the right operations and solving problems step by step. These skills will help them become more confident problem-solvers.
Science
In Term 3, students developed preliminary knowledge about space and explored some of its key ideas. This term, they’ll build on that learning by working more independently to research an area of space that interest them. Students will investigate their chosen topics and share what they discover as they deepen their understanding of the universe.
Wellbeing
This Term, students will take part in activities that help them build positive relationships and work together. They’ll practise cooperation and teamwork and explore the idea that everyone can enjoy different interests and activities, regardless of gender. Through age-appropriate discussions and tasks, students will learn to treat one another with kindness, fairness and respect.
