Reading
We are using our class text The Hobbit (3/4A) and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (3/4B) as well as a number of group and individual texts to help us unpack the role of Summariser and help us create effective and concise summaries.
Writing
3/4 A - have completed a mini narrative unit in which they learnt about and created short stories with our visiting pre-service teachers Valentina and Renee. They followed the Writer’s Workshop process of Seed→Plan→ Draft→Revise/Edit→Publish. Students have published some funny, intriguing and truly terrifying tales.
The 3/4s are now looking at Information Reports, how their structure differs from narratives and important elements that can be found in an information report. Students will continue to learn about these and craft their own over the next few weeks.
Maths
Our multiplication unit is underway with an initial dive into times tables. A sound understanding of times tables will form a solid foundation on which all multiplication (and division) work will build on. Practising at home is a great way to build automatic recall of times tables. (Two times tables charts and an activity matrix have been included here to help you support your learners at home).
Integrated
Students have begun a research project on a world climate zone. As part of the project students will need to research a climate zone of their choice and present their findings using slides. We will discuss ways in which presentations can be made effective and ways to engage audiences whilst presenting.
Gardening
In Week 7, our young gardeners dived into the fascinating world of plant life cycles as we explored seeds and the clever ways they travel. Students got hands-on by planting their very own tomato seeds, weeding our garden beds, and turning the soil to prepare for new growth. We also investigated the unique seeds we discovered around the garden and folded custom seed packets to safely store our collection. In Week 8 we harvested the mushrooms we have been growing in our classes and used these to make delicious dumplings!
It was an exciting fortnight of learning, digging, cooking, eating and preparing for a bountiful season ahead!
Malpa
Our Malpa crew were lucky enough to get a visit from Ambulance Victoria. We learnt about ways to respond in an emergency and who we should contact. Here we were having a go at getting our peers into the recovery position.
Book Day Celebration
It was terrific to see so many students get into the spirit of book day, dressing up and engaging in a number of activities from illustrating and writing to borrowing and sharing their love of books. The design-a-door activity allowed students to collaboratively work together to create a shared vision on their classroom doors. There were many outstanding contributions this year from classes this year. The winning door (as voted by students) will be revealed at assembly this coming Monday (7th September).
