Kii from the Music Room!

This term I’ve been really enjoying working with the 2/3/4s again! We began with reviewing our skills from last year and have started adding new ones.

Our warm up song that we have been exploring is Mother Mountain from the Dhungala Choral Connection Song Book. It connects to a story from Yuin County. We watched this performance to get inspired: https://www.abc.net.au/education/collections/lets-sing/mother-mountain/105061664 .

We have been exploring notation (how music is written down to share with others) and have used the graphic notation of this pitch map to help us keep the melody of the song:

We are having fun with ukuleles, beginners practising chords C, F and Am and more experienced uke players adding G and demonstrating to the class to extend their skills. We are now adding other instruments to make a class band, using the skills we have been practicing; steady beat, rhythm, notation, uke chords, singing skills and other elements of music.

We have been finishing off the lesson with Drama games! Catch the photos of students in frozen characters while playing Night At The Museum.

Boite Schools Chorus

The TPS Choir had a wonderful time singing with the Boite Schools Chorus on August 11th! Students practiced this year’s songs from Ghana during our lunchtime rehearsals and at home. Our singers always came to rehearsals with enthusiasm and energy for what they love doing - singing! They sang in a number of different languages that were represented in the songs from Ghana and heard stories and cultural traditions. The Boite Schools Chorus is a big commitment for students and families and I am so proud of them all!

All of the work culminated in an excursion to the Melbourne Town Hall, expertly and kindly accompanied by staff and parent volunteers Kristie Ferguson and Shoshannah Orenstein. 17 students and 3 adults travelled by tram to the venue where the TPS choir joined with 11 other school choirs from around Melbourne on stage to rehearse for the performance. Some of our students were hot and bothered under the lights during the rehearsal but that didn’t stop them from putting their heart into it.

Everyone was able to rest and have something to eat after the big rehearsal and then get ready for the performance. Some students were nervous, some excited but most were nervous-cited.The performance started at 7pm and all of the choir members spotted their families in the audience. The TPS choir sang their hearts out and the whole chorus sounded amazing! There were Ghanaian drummers and dancers and even a circus act during the performance.

After the concert we all went home tired but happy and I went home feeling so proud of our TPS singers.
