STEM Update

Building, Creating & Imagining with LEGO!
Our Foundation and Year 1 students had an exciting and hands-on STEM experience when Ryan Evans from Brickulum joined us for a special LEGO incursion! Brickulum is an engaging program that uses the modularity and familiarity of LEGO bricks to bring Digital Technologies, Design and STEM to life, while creating wonderful opportunities for creativity, problem-solving, engineering and cross-curricular learning.
Ryan brought a wealth of LEGO® knowledge and experience to our students. Having been cast for Season 3 of LEGO Masters Australia, Ryan and his brick-buddy Gabby made it all the way to the finale! He then had the incredible opportunity to return for LEGO Masters Grand Masters—a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience!
During the incursion, our students became little engineers, designers and LEGO® creators.
Tall Tower Challenge
Our students worked creatively to design and build the tallest and strongest towers they could. They experimented with different ways of connecting and balancing LEGO bricks while working together, testing their ideas and solving construction challenges.
Funnimals – Funny + Animals
The students also explored Funnimals, combining the key features of two different animals to invent their own unique creature—for example, a Girtle: part giraffe and part turtle!
This fun challenge encouraged students to look closely at the distinctive features and adaptations of animals, while using their imagination to create something completely new. Even when a LEGO creation looked a little unusual, our students were fantastic at explaining their thinking—because, as Ryan reminded us, that 1x8 LEGO® brick really can be a scorpion's tail!
A huge thank you to Ryan Evans and Brickulum for an incredibly fun, creative and entertaining STEM experience. Our Foundation and Year 1 students had a fantastic time building, imagining, experimenting and problem-solving with LEGO!
Who knows? We may have some future LEGO Masters in the making!
