F1 – STEM Racing State Team

Our fabulous F1 – STEM Racing State Team consists of Flynn Van Deursen, Hudson Barnes and Archie Pinhorn.  Last year they came in Second in their category and this year they have STEPped up and are going in the highest category – Professional Class.

This involves designing a F1 car, and sending it off to get specially machined out of balsa wood before being painted in their team colours.  This process alone requires very careful planning and calculations to choose the right density of the block to get the car within the weight requirements.  They also need to design and 3D print the wheels, grommets, wings, halo and nose cone of the car – again trying to get within the weight requirements.  This year they are also required to make a trade booth display and design & obtain a team uniform (which they will wear for the competition).  Their incredibly detailed portfolio comes next where they explain their creation journey of car design, complete with engineering diagrams.

They have been incredibly fortunate to obtain a sponsorship from Bendigo Bank, as they need to pay their own way in the competition.  They are working really hard – each one has their own role of responsibility.  They are well supported by Mr Thompson who is guiding and assisting them through this process (as well as keeping them on track from time to time!!!)  The competition is coming up in October.  Well done guys, keep up the great work!
