Boarding Life

A Change in Season

Spring has arrived at Loreto, and the blossoms appearing on the trees outside our Boarding House windows provide an unmistakable signal that the season is changing. Inside the House, this time of year brings changes of its own.

Recently, we celebrated our Leadership Handover Ceremony, marking the formal transition from our outgoing Student Leadership Team to the girls who will lead our Boarding community into 2027. It is always a significant moment. Madeleine and Nellie, along with our 2026 Boarding Leaders, have shaped the House in their own way, and now it is time for Airlee, Matilda and our incoming leaders to begin doing the same. We warmly welcome our new House Captains: Charlotte, supported by Deputy House Captain Meg, who will lead Wigmore, and Ruby, supported by Deputy House Captain Mary, who will lead Poyntz. We look forward to seeing each of our new leaders bring their own strengths and ideas to their roles.

For our Year 12 boarders, an even greater change is approaching. Their years of school and boarding are rapidly drawing to a close. Soon, many of the routines and boundaries that have quietly structured their days will begin to fall away. There will be no evening roll call, leave approval or staff member checking that they are where they need to be.

There is something both exciting and slightly daunting about that freedom. Yet this is also what we have been preparing them for. Between the foundations provided by their families and the independence developed through living in Boarding, the girls leave with the skills to navigate what comes next, make their own decisions and, when things don't quite go to plan, catch themselves and try again.

And then the season changes once more. Early next term, we will welcome our 2027 boarders for Orientation, some excited, some nervous, and most probably a little of both. New routines will begin, new friendships will form and another group of girls will begin discovering what it means to call Loreto Boarding home.

This is one of the privileges of Boarding: watching girls grow in confidence and independence until they are ready to step beyond it.
