Learning Across the
Senior School
Our Year 11 and Year 12 Legal Studies students have recently enjoyed some wonderful opportunities to take their learning beyond the classroom and experience the legal system in action.
The Year 11 Legal Studies class visited the Adelaide Magistrates Court, where students were able to observe real court proceedings, including a number of bail applications. We were very fortunate to have Sergeant Olive speak with the students, sharing his experiences and providing valuable insight into the role of police within the criminal justice system.
A particular highlight was the opportunity to meet Magistrate Wickens, who generously spent time with the students explaining court processes, discussing the role of a magistrate and answering their many questions. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to make connections between their classroom learning and the realities of the justice system.
Our Year 12 Legal Studies students were equally fortunate to return to the Supreme Court to observe the closing addresses in a high-profile jury trial. Seeing the closing addresses provided students with an invaluable opportunity to observe advocacy, evidence and the jury process firsthand.
Following the proceedings, the solicitor for the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Foundas, very generously spoke with the students about the case, including some of the evidentiary issues that arose during the trial, and answered their questions. The opportunity to hear directly from a legal practitioner involved in the proceedings made the experience particularly memorable.
A special thank you also goes to Mr Foley, Leader of Humanities, for his continued support of these opportunities and for helping our Legal Studies students access such valuable and authentic learning experiences beyond the classroom.
