Year One

Welcome to Term 4, Grade One families!

We have a busy and exciting term already underway.

In our first week back, all grades learned about Allergy Awareness Week with Nurse Alison. Saltwater is very lucky to have such an amazing and talented, hard-working nurse at our school.

Also, in the second week back, our students attended a Scholastic Book Fair, which helped to raise money for our new school library.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this fundraiser.

Reading

We have been inferring using pictures and progressing to text. Inferring is when a reader uses picture clues, everyday experiences, and simple story hints to figure out something an author does not say out loud. It helps us to understand what we are reading.

Phonics

During our phonics sessions we have focused on the digraphs (two letters making one sound) ‘ou’ and ‘or’ such as in the words, four and tore.

Writing

We have been reading, researching and writing non-fiction texts about animals, as part of our

current inquiry about living things and how they adapt.

Our students really enjoyed making trioramas with additional information about their animals adaptations. They drew their chosen animals habitat, then their animal, and included its food.

Finally they wrote facts about their animals special adaptations and why that animal needed those adaptations to survive.

Maths

In maths we have been learning about how to measure the length of an object. We have even learnt to estimate a length in centimetres.

All students have enjoyed using different materials to measure length and have had the opportunity to learn how to use a ruler. We have discussed various units of measurement including centimetres and millimetres.

Our next focus will be on learning about ten more and ten less than a given number and revisiting number lines.

Reminders:

  • Please remember that your child needs to wear a wide brimmed navy blue hat in Term 4.

  • It really helps to have their hat labelled with their full name.

  • We will keep reminding families but for those of you that need to plan ahead, there will be a student free day on Monday the 2nd of November. The day after is a public holiday for the Melbourne Cup.

  • Dress up Day on the 30th of October. All gold coin donations will go towards an outdoor reading corner. Dress in a costume of your choice.
