Prep and Year 1 Visual Art

Welcome back to Term 4! I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable two week holiday and is feeling refreshed and ready for another exciting term of learning in Art.

The first two weeks in Art have been amazing! We have loved settling back into our creative routines and connecting our learning with our Prep and Year 1 inquiry units, which explore the wonderful world of living things.

During Weeks 1 and 2, our Prep and Year 1 artists drew on their prior knowledge of Pop Art by revisiting the work of Romero Britto and reflecting on the colourful patterns and shapes they explored last term when creating their Britto-inspired cats. Students were excited to build on these ideas and apply them in a new way to create their own Pop Art Portraits of Living Things.

Students chose a living thing that was meaningful or interesting to them, such as a pet, animal, plant or person, and used simple shapes, bold patterns, colours and Pop Art-inspired details to bring their artwork to life. They then worked through the publishing process, developing their ideas into finished portraits that will soon be proudly displayed on our Art room walls!

It has been a fantastic start to Term 4, and I am so excited to see where our young artists take their ideas as we continue exploring living things through Art!

Year 4 Art

Welcome to Term 4 Visual Arts! This term, Year 4 students will explore Perspective and discover how artists create the illusion of depth, distance and space on a flat surface.

In Week 1, students learned what perspective means and explored how artists use a horizon line, vanishing point and perspective lines to create depth in their artwork. Students practised using simple perspective lines to make their drawings appear more three-dimensional.

In Week 2, students built on their learning by exploring two-point perspective. They learned how to identify two vanishing points and use perspective lines to create simple three-dimensional objects. Students also practised using a ruler to create neat and accurate lines.

Throughout the unit, students will be encouraged to be Thinkers, Communicators and Reflective learners while they experiment with perspective, solve drawing challenges and reflect on how their artistic choices create the illusion of depth.

I am looking forward to seeing Year 4 artists develop their perspective skills, while encouraging and learning from one another to bring their drawings to life!

Welcome back to Term 4! We hope all students and families enjoyed a relaxing break and are ready for another exciting term of creativity in Visual Arts. This term, Grade 5 and 6 students are exploring the fascinating world of perspective drawing, learning how artists use lines, vanishing points, and perspective techniques to create the illusion of depth and three-dimensional space on a flat surface.

Over the first two weeks, Grade 5 students have been introduced to one-point perspective, experimenting with drawing scenery that creates a sense of distance and depth. They have been practising how to use a single vanishing point to guide their lines and make their drawings appear more realistic.

Meanwhile, Grade 6 students have been tackling the more challenging technique of two-point perspective. They began by constructing simple three-dimensional shapes using two vanishing points, developing their understanding of how objects change depending on the angle from which they are viewed. Some students have already challenged themselves to extend these new skills by creating buildings, applying their understanding of perspective to more complex architectural forms. These foundational activities are helping students build confidence and prepare for more creative and detailed perspective projects throughout the term.

Spanish

This week, our Spanish students have been learning about Frida Kahlo, a famous Mexican painter of the 20th century, exploring her artwork, culture and creativity.

Prep-Year 2

Our youngest learners have been discovering Spanish colours, animals and flowers through Frida’s colourful paintings and creating their own artwork.

Years 3-4

Students have been describing Frida’s paintings in Spanish and creating self-portraits inspired by her artistic style.

Years 5-6

Students have been exploring how Frida expressed her identity and emotions through art, creating self-portraits that represent their own interests and personalities.

The photo below features our youngest Spanish learners exploring Frida Kahlo’s colourful world!

As we begin Term Four, students across the Primary Years are learning to better develop the social and emotional skills they need to thrive at school and in everyday life. Our Wellbeing program is guided by the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships curriculum, developed by the Department of Education, and focuses on recognising and valuing each child’s individual strengths, needs, and experiences.

During the program students will engage in learning experiences that strengthen self-awareness, emotional literacy, resilience, and positive relationships. They will explore strategies for managing emotions, solving problems respectfully, making responsible choices, and communicating with confidence and empathy. Students will also reflect on their personal strengths and consider how their actions and choices contribute to a safe, respectful, and inclusive school community.

Our focus remains on creating a caring learning environment where every student feels valued, connected, and supported. Through these learning experiences, we aim to empower students to build confidence, develop independence, and strengthen the skills they need to navigate challenges and maintain positive relationships throughout Term Four.
