Fantastisches Film Festival!

The annual German Film Festival brings the best of new and classic German cinema to our screens. This year, all of Uni High’s Year 9 and 10 German students have had or will have the opportunity to see one of the many films being shown, and immerse themselves in the language and culture in the comfort of a Palace Cinema. What better way to learn German?!

Year 10 German students saw a new film called Winners at the Kino (appropriately named: Kino means cinema in German) in Collins St. Winners is about a teenage refugee, whose family fled Syria and re-settled in Berlin. The main character, Mona, faces challenges at her new school with the language and the attitudes of her peers, which are less than welcoming. When Mona shows her skills on the soccer field she gains respect from those around her and is able to build friendships and connections with others. The film highlights some of the issues refugees can face in a new country, and how the international language of sport and in particular football, can help people to connect. Highly relevant issues the world over.

Our students left the cinema smiling and gave the film rave reviews. Be sure to keep an eye out for the next German or French Film festivals and consider taking your family along for a rich cultural experience.
