Booeegigat Term 2 Activities & Excursions

The first half of Term 2 has been one of great exploration for students in the Year 9 Booeegigat Program. From our central city location on Lonsdale Street students have experienced an array of new locations and activities on foot. In Connect, students cemented their knowledge of Melbourne’s city grid by creating a photo map of the CBD, independently plotting their routes and taking beautiful snapshots of key landmarks and sites they found interesting.

In Curiosity: Futures students have been speculating on the positive features of a futuristic city. They made their way to the Metro Tunnel Headquarters to hear firsthand how Melbourne plans to ease congestion and modernise the city train network. Through VR headsets students could “see” their future train stations: Arden, Parkville, State Library, Town Hall and Anzac.

In Curiosity: Changing Australian Identities, students had a guided tour of Parliament House. They admired the historic and opulent features of the building, and discussed key features and concepts of our parliamentary system. Democracy was truly in action when following the tour, they had a private audience with their local representative, Ellen Sandell. The students were able to quiz Ms Sandell on her experiences as a Member of Parliament and pose questions about issues that concerned them, including funding for education, immigration and the environment.

On the horizon, students will head to The University of Melbourne to attend a special guest lecture by First Nations author and advocate, Thomas Mayo. Getting out and about in the city surrounding them is a key feature of the Booeegigat Program, with the State Library, Queen Victoria Market, RMIT basketball courts and Flagstaff Gardens regularly featuring in their timetable.

In just a few weeks, our Gulum students will swap the city life for the Grampians when they head off to camp. In preparation, they will complete the 1,000 Steps (Kokoda Memorial) Walk in Dandenong.
