Governing Council - Becoming a member

Have you ever thought about getting more involved in the school's decision-making? Why not join the Governing Council?

All parents/carers who have children currently enrolled at our school in 2026 are eligible to nominate for election as a councillor.

A governing council meets twice a term to talk about the direction for the site. Meetings are a big part of being on a governing council, but it’s not only that. In your role you might:

be on an interview panel to select the site’s principal or director
need to deal with media in response to an event or a good news story
be an employing authority of out of school hours care (OSHC) or canteen staff.

Shared responsibility

You do not work alone when you are on a governing council. You and the site leader have shared responsibilities, but your day-to-day involvement is different. In your role on a governing council, you work with the site leader to:

involve the local community
develop and approve local policies
set the broad direction and vision of the site
monitor and review the site improvement plan
be the employing authority of some services, including OSHC.

Site leaders work with governing councils to:

give educational leadership
carry out the site’s policies
carry out the site learning plan.

No parent/caregiver is eligible if they are:

declared bankrupt or has applied 'for the benefit of a law for the relief of insolvent debtors'
convicted of any offence prescribed by administrative instruction

Permanent employees of the Department for Education may stand for election but:

must not compromise the majority of councillors
are ineligible to hold the position of Chairperson

All school volunteers including members of Governing Council undertake a Criminal History Check through The Department. The school facilitates and pays for this process.

If you are elected, you will have the opportunity, if you wish to, be a member of a subcommittee. It will be completely your decision. Please complete the nomination link if you wish to be a member of our 2027 Governing Council.

Learning Updates from across the school:

	Learning Update from each area across the school
Pre School	At the beginning of week 7 we welcomed an additional SSO Gursahiba and a student completing a Certificate 3 in Early Childhood Services named Nilam. They are both fitting in very well with our preschool team! The children have been excitedly investigating and exploring shells. We’re excited to see where this leads us!
Early Years (Rooms 6,7 and 8)	Room 4- Our class has had a wonderful start to the term! We have begun writing our first words, enjoyed lots of exciting experiments for Science Week, and even had fun doing some cooking. It has been a busy and exciting time of learning, exploring and discovering together! Rm 6 - We’ve enjoyed the Children’s book week. We read lots of Children’s Book Week shortlisted books, made pictures about the books, and loved the school’s Book Week Parade. Our favourite maths game this term is playing the bead string tug-of-war with a partner. We learn counting, addition and subtraction whilst playing the game. Rm 7 - We have recently delved into a big writing unit on ‘procedural texts’ lately, and have loved continuing to review books, especially around book week. We have had a big ‘data’ focus in maths and have expanded our repertoire of data collecting methods, and learned about different graphs. Science week saw us attempt many experiments and learn how to reflect on our predictions! In Room 8, we explored many of the 2026 shortlisted picture books and voted for our absolute favourite. The clear winner was Derek, which captured the hearts of our students for a variety of reasons. Inspired by this book, students created their own Derek stories during Book Making time. We are looking forward to sharing our unique stories with other classes soon.
Primary Years (Rooms 9, 11, 12	Room 9: In Science this term, students have been learning about living and non-living things and the characteristics that help us classify them. They have been researching how living things grow, change and survive, and explore the needs of living things through the life cycle. Room 11: Over the last two terms in gardening, with the help from the lovely SSO Dilanjali, we have been learning all about what makes soil healthy and why it is so important to us. Students have been working on group projects to show their learning which we are going to submit to the Soil Week Australia Team. Students in Room 11 have really engaged with and enjoyed this project. They have created some amazing things such as board games, comic strips, and posters. We are all really proud of our work! Room 12: English - We have just completed the Text Based unit of Persuasive Speeches. We studied some examples: Martin Luther King Jr., Greta Thunberg and Sir Henry Parkes. Students are in the process of publishing their own Persuasive Speech. Maths - Learning about data and statistics which include constructing dot plots and column graphs with and without digital technologies.
Primary Special Class	Students enjoyed participating in the Book Week events this term. We have enjoyed reading the books included in this year's short list. Looking forward to joining peers for sports day coming soon.
Specialists	PE Students have enjoyed their Gymnastics lessons delivered by TriSkills We have been practising our Sports Day events in readiness of the big day!
	Technologies Early Years students have been practising using symbols to share information/data. Middle Primary students are designing attachments for the Dash robots to solve automated farming and rescue robot challenges. Upper Primary students have created 3 different game controllers for arcade games - a keyboard, joystick and a “Whack a Mole” hammer style, using everyday materials and the Makey Makeys.
	Japanese Early Years students have been learning Japanese numbers and the origin of Pokemon, plus single stroke hiragana. Primary Years students have been working towards using a sentence to describe the weather in a city and have learnt the names of several Japanese cities. The continue to learn hiragana and practise greetings.
