Engineering the Strongest Spaghetti Bridge
Let’s Get Constructive!
Our Year 9 STEM students recently put their engineering knowledge and problem-solving skills to the test in an exciting Spaghetti Bridge Challenge!
Working in teams, students were challenged to design and construct the strongest bridge possible using just one bag of spaghetti and hot glue. With limited materials and a clear engineering goal, students had to carefully consider how the shape, structure and distribution of forces could influence the strength and stability of their bridge.
Throughout the challenge, students applied key engineering principles, including load distribution, tension, compression, stability and structural design. They researched different designs & decided on the one best to win this challenge.
The activity provided students with an authentic opportunity to experience the engineering design process. Students identified problems, brainstormed solutions, created designs, evaluated their results and suggest improvements based on evidence.
Perhaps the most valuable part of the challenge was seeing students work collaboratively to overcome unexpected challenges. Building a strong spaghetti bridge required communication, creativity, persistence, critical thinking and teamwork. Students quickly discovered that successful engineering is not simply about having the biggest or most complicated structure—it is about making thoughtful design decisions based on scientific and engineering principles.
The classroom was filled with creativity, experimentation and plenty of spaghetti! Students will test their bridges in a few weeks, updates to follow!
This hands-on challenge allows students to connect STEM theory with a practical engineering problem while developing skills that extend well beyond the classroom.
Well done to our Year 9 STEM students for their fantastic teamwork, creativity and willingness to rethink their designs. A truly cracking engineering challenge!
