Year 10 Work Experience

During the last week of Term 2, our Year 10 students completed their Work Experience placements. A couple of students have kindly shared reflections on their experiences to encourage our younger year levels to begin looking for Work Experience placements in industries they are interested in.

Hannah Jenkins

'I completed my work experience in the healthcare industry at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in the Ophthalmology department. Throughout the week of my placement I participated in a variety of experiences such as sitting in on consults with the orthoptics team, watching the photography of the back of the eye, vision tests be completed or even moving around with the doctors team down on the ICU(intensive care unit), to visit the patients that were admitted to the hospital. However, by far the most enlightening and engaging experience was having the privilege to watch some eye surgeries such as cataract removals or back of the eye specialists. Throughout my placement I gained valuable knowledge on the eye as well as the functioning of the hospital and the unit as a whole with the entire experience only further solidifying my decision to pursue ophthalmology as a future career. For any year 10 students or future work experience students who are looking for advise for their placement, the best thing I can say is to always ask that question. Whether you feel like its stupid, or something that you think will be a bother, always ask. You can gain so much information and vital knowledge on topics and small details that you never thought was important or that you needed, that turned out to be insanely interesting and something you will forever remember.' 

Hudson Griffiths

'I completed my work experience in the hospitality industry at a local cafe. Throughout my time there, I worked on the frontline of the business by taking customers’ orders, preparing food and drinks, cleaning, and keeping the café organised. I also learnt that working in hospitality requires great communication skills, especially during busy periods. The thing I enjoyed most was being part of a real team and interacting with the regular customers. Each day brought a new challenge, and I enjoyed that because I knew I was learning new things every day. The staff I worked with were kind, friendly and welcoming, and taught me everything I needed to know. I completed a wide range of tasks, which made the experience both valuable and enjoyable.

The placement helped me improve my communication, teamwork and confidence. I also gained a better understanding of food safety, customer service, and the responsibility that comes with working in a fast-paced workplace. My work experience confirmed that hospitality is an industry I enjoy. The most rewarding outcome was being offered a casual job at the cafe after my placement. My advice to next year's Year 10 students is to choose a placement that interests you, work hard, stay positive, and make the most of every opportunity—you never know where it might lead.'
