Creating Helium

Term 3 Week 3b

Year 12 Physics Students Explore Helium Spectra in Real Time

This morning, our Year 12 Physics class had the unique opportunity to observe the spectrum of helium (He) firsthand in the ASEC control room.

While this is typically a topic studied only through textbooks, our students were able to engage in this advanced procedure thanks to our specialised camera setup and spectroscopic analysis software.

Using this technology, they successfully captured and analysed the emission lines of helium - an impressive and complex process that brings theoretical concepts vividly to life. The clarity of the results, displayed graphically, generated real excitement among the students as they saw physics in action.

This hands-on experience not only deepened their understanding of atomic spectra but also highlighted the real-world applications of physics beyond the classroom.
