YEAR 10 WORK SKILLS PROGRAM

3 Day Industry Experience

🌟 Entrepreneurship in Hospitality

Last week, a small group of Year 10 students participated in a three-day applied learning program focused on Entrepreneurship in Hospitality

The program was designed to develop industry-relevant skills, build confidence, and provide insight into a range of career pathways across hospitality, retail, and small business.

Students explored key concepts including workplace safety, risk assessment, design thinking, and industry processes, with a strong emphasis on hands-on STEM learning and problem-solving.

They also engaged with industry partners to gain a deeper understanding of real-world business operations.

📍 Day 1 – Industry Tour (4/5)

Students visited local businesses in Lilydale, including:

  • Locavore Cafe – where students participated in a presentation on hospitality, careers, marketing, and small business operations.
  • Mustard Tree Op Shop – where students explored retail careers, customer service, and marketing in a community-focused setting.

Students concluded the day at Yarra Ranges Tech School (YRTS), gaining early exposure to real-world industry environments.

📍 Days 2 & 3 – Applied Learning at YRTS (5/5 & 7/5)

The final two days were held at Yarra Ranges Tech School (YRTS), where students participated in immersive, technology-rich STEM and hospitality-based activities.

Students developed and refined project ideas, explored industry tools and processes, and built practical skills in planning, design, and problem-solving.

These sessions encouraged students to take ownership of their learning while developing teamwork, communication, and independent working skills.

The three-day industry experience provided students with an alternative to traditional work experience, supporting them to develop independence, workplace skills, and a clearer understanding of future career pathways.
