Dear Grade 3 Families,
Welcome back! We hope you enjoyed a refreshing break. We have a busy term ahead of us, filled with deep dives into health and wellbeing, science, literature and mathematics. Here is a look at what your child will be exploring this term:
Reading
In Reading this term, we will continue building students' world knowledge through a combination of rich literature and engaging non-fiction texts. Our class novel is the award-winning The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate, a powerful story that explores themes of friendship, empathy, courage, and standing up for what is right. As we read together, students will develop their reading fluency, broaden their vocabulary, and deepen their comprehension through meaningful discussion and analysis of the text.
Alongside our novel study, students will read a range of non-fiction texts to strengthen their ability to locate and interpret information. They will learn how to identify key ideas and supporting details, and apply effective strategies for extracting and synthesising information. These skills will help students become more confident, capable, and critical readers across all areas of learning.
Writing
In Writing, we will continue to strengthen our skills as strong writers, using the mentor text Binny’s Diwali. Students will focus on mastering ‘show, not tell’ and expanding their sentences to add more detail to their writing. Following this, we will transition into The Writing Revolution, where we will continue to develop our writing skills. We will end the term by exploring how to write compelling persuasive texts.
Numeracy: Explicit Mathematics Program (EMP)
Our daily math routine remains consistent to ensure every student builds a solid foundation. Each day includes: Daily Reviews: To reinforce previously learned concepts. Quick Teaches: Short, sharp instructional bursts. Explicit Sessions: teacher-led instruction where mathematical concepts are broken down clearly and students repeatedly practise what they are learning.
Knowledge Units: Health and Science
This term, our Knowledge Units will see students become scientists and health experts. We begin with a focus on Health and Wellbeing, learning about the importance of sleep, exercise and a balanced diet, amongst other things. Later in the term, we move into Earth Sciences, where we will investigate water as an important Earth resource, including exploring the water cycle.
Year 3 Camp
We are thrilled that students will be heading to Campaspe Downs for an overnight camp in November. While it is still a few months away, please keep a close eye on Compass for updates regarding dates, packing lists, and payment schedules.
Swimming
In weeks 7 and 8, students will be heading to Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre for daily swimming lessons. Please keep a close eye on Compass for updates regarding dates, what to bring, and payment.
Homework
We ask that Grade 3 students complete:Reading: 20 minutes, 5 times per week. Maths: 3 "My Numeracy" tasks or engagement with "Sunset Maths" via Essential Assessments. If you have any questions regarding logins or tasks, please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher.
Tissue Boxes
As we are in the cooler months, "runny nose" season is upon us! We would greatly appreciate any donations of tissue boxes for the classrooms.
We are looking forward to a wonderful Term 3 with you and your children!
With kindness,
The 2026 Grade 3 Team
Tess, Caity, Holly & Samantha
