Coming Up at FWPS

Get ready for some reading adventures in Term 3! From Monday, 17th August - Friday, 21st August students will be celebrating Book Week at school.
This year we are excited to host two fabulous authors. On the 19th August, Emma Bowd will be visiting grades Prep, One, Two and Three to share her books and an exciting new release! On the 27th August, Jane Godwin the author of A Fall From Grace, Look Me in the Eye and many more fabulous books will visit the grades Four, Five and Six students.
Please pay and confirm your child's attendance via Compass once the event has been published.
As always, we will conclude the festivities with our book themed activity day and dress up parade on Friday, 21st August.
For our eager students and families, start planning your Book Week parade costumes now, ready for the big event!
This year the theme for Book Week is a Symphony of Stories. This might give your family a little extra direction when trying to decide on a character to dress up as. But we all know, all books are an adventure so just choose a costume that brings your child the most joy and excitement to wear.
As part of Science Week at FWPS, every student from Prep to Year 6 is invited to design and build their own paper glider.
The challenge: Build a glider using only paper, straws and tape. It's not a paper plane; the challenge is that the design must include a straw! Once it's built, students are welcome to decorate it however they like.
Here’s a short video for inspiration, showing one simple glider design and the idea of STEM testing and improving: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-e8CXoOSbU
Two important things to remember:
- Write your child's name and grade clearly on the glider so it doesn't get lost during testing.
Bring the finished glider to school by Thursday, 13th August for our whole-school test flight.
Students can work on their glider independently, with family at home, or at school during lunchtime at Library Club.
A big part of this challenge is testing and improving. Build one, try it out, then tweak something and try again. Small changes like wing size, straw length or how it's thrown can make a big difference!
A full brief with tips is attached to this post. It's a great one to sit down and read together as a family if you want to get involved!
