Term 3 in Year 2

We are thrilled to welcome back our Grade 2 students for Term 3! After a productive and engaging Term 2, it’s been wonderful to see the students return with enthusiasm and a readiness to take on new challenges. The Grade 2 team has been very impressed with how students consistently demonstrate our school values of Responsibility, Resilience, Respect, and Belonging, in the classroom and throughout the wider school community.

We also have some exciting events to look forward to this term:

  • Week 5 (Thursday): Junior School Disco

  • Week 6: Book Week: (Wednesday) Author Visit Emma Bowd! (Friday): Book Week Parade! Students are encouraged to dress up as a favourite book character. We look forward to seeing their creativity and love for reading come to life.

  • Week 7 & 8: Swimming Program

Numeracy

In Term 3, students will continue building their confidence with numbers and place value. They will learn to read, write and break apart four-digit numbers, as well as add three-digit numbers. Students will also explore different ways to solve division problems, including using arrays and skip counting.

Grade 2 students will develop their understanding of fractions by learning about halves, quarters and eighths. Throughout the term, they will also investigate measurement concepts such as capacity, mass and area, as well as collect and interpret simple data through statistics. Students will discover how these maths skills can be used in everyday situations.

Literacy

This term, students will continue building their confidence as readers by developing their reading fluency (reading smoothly and accurately) and understanding of what they read. As we reach the end of our Little Learners Love Literacy Stage 7.5 program, children will learn about long vowel sounds, silent letters and suffixes. These skills will help them become stronger readers and more confident writers.

Throughout the term, we will also explore a range of reading strategies to help students think more deeply about texts. These include asking questions, making predictions, making inferences, creating pictures in their minds (visualising), retelling stories, and identifying important words and ideas.

Although home readers may not be sent home every week, reading at home each day is still one of the best ways to support your child's learning. On the alternate weeks, students will bring home a fluency reading that we have been practising together in class. This is a great opportunity to make reading fun by using different character voices, changing your expression and tone, and paying attention to punctuation to bring the text to life. Whether it's a library book, a favourite book from home, or a Little Learners online reader, just 10–15 minutes of reading each day makes a big difference.

In writing, students will continue learning about different text types, including narratives and explanations. They will explore how these texts are organised, including using paragraphs and labelled diagrams. Students will also work on expanding their sentences by using conjunctions, adjectives and adverbs, while continuing to build their vocabulary, sentence fluency and punctuation skills. Regular handwriting and spelling practice will also remain an important part of our writing program.

Knowledge

Our Geography unit this term focuses on Australia, being a special country with many different places, people, and cultures. By learning about our land, our neighbours, and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, we will begin to understand how people live in different ways and why it’s important to care for our country and respect everyone who calls it home. Students will be mapping continents, focusing on Oceania, identifying the location of neighbouring countries through compass points in relation to Australia. We will map Australia, identifying states, territories and capital cities. As well as major geographical landmarks. Students will also explore major landmarks around Australia, both man made and natural as well as identify examples of vegetation in some different landscapes. Students will also explore the differences between our states and territories and Indigenous Language Groups and Countries. Students will also look at climate and weather patterns around Australia, including daily and seasonal changes and how these affect decisions made in everyday life.

This term, we will also continue learning about Respectful Relationships. This includes building positive relationships, stress management strategies, promoting positive gender roles, knowing how and when to ask for help, and beginning to understand the concept of consent in an age-appropriate way.
