Term 3 in Year 1

Welcome back!

We hope everyone had a relaxing break and is ready for some wonderful learning this term!

Here is what is happening in each of our curriculum areas:

Literacy

Students will continue participating in the Little Learners Love Literacy Program, progressing through Stage 7.3 and moving into Stage 7.4 by the end of the term. They will continue developing their decoding, reading and spelling skills by learning new graphemes, blending and segmenting words, and applying these patterns in both reading and writing. During writing lessons, students will use a range of engaging picture story books to build their language comprehension, expand their vocabulary, and inspire their own writing. They will continue developing their understanding of sentence structure, grammar and punctuation by creating a variety of texts and using capital letters, punctuation and appropriate spacing consistently. Students will also participate in Spelling Mastery lessons to strengthen spelling accuracy, phonics knowledge and word recognition through explicit and systematic instruction.

Numeracy

Students will continue using the Explicit Maths Program this term to support clear instruction, build strong mathematical foundations, and develop confidence in their learning. Daily review activities will continue to strengthen fluency and reinforce previously learned concepts. Throughout the term, students will investigate a range of mathematical concepts including problem solving, money, halves and quarters, addition and subtraction strategies, sharing, time, statistics and measurement. Students will also participate in daily Facts on Fire sessions to build automatic recall of key number facts, supporting speed, accuracy and confidence when working with mathematics.

Units of Knowledge

This term, students will explore two exciting knowledge units. Early in the term, they will investigate Earth and Space Sciences, learning about the planets in our Solar System and developing an understanding of Earth's place in space. Later in the term, students will explore the History unit Then and Now, where they will compare life in the past with life today. Through stories, photographs and artefacts, students will investigate how homes, schools, technology and daily life have changed over time, while recognising aspects of the past that remain the same.

Berry Street, Respectful Relationships and Consent Education

Students will continue developing the social and emotional skills needed to build positive relationships and become confident, resilient learners. Through the Respectful Relationships curriculum, students will explore problem solving, help-seeking strategies and stress management, building their confidence to respond positively to a range of everyday social and emotional situations. Later in the term, students will participate in two Consent Education lessons, where they will learn about the difference between surprises and secrets, and explore actions they can take to help keep themselves safe and seek support from trusted adults. We will continue implementing the Berry Street Education Model through daily Welcome Circles and Ready to Learn activities, helping students develop a sense of belonging, emotional regulation and readiness for learning. Brain breaks and mindfulness strategies will continue to support students' wellbeing and engagement throughout the school day.

Swimming Program

During Weeks 7 and 8, Grade One students will participate in the school's swimming program. The program provides opportunities for students to develop water confidence and strengthen their swimming skills in a safe and supportive environment. More information regarding session times and requirements will be provided closer to the commencement of the program.

We look forward to another exciting term of learning and thank our families for their ongoing support.

Kind regards,

The Grade One Team
