Learning in Year 1

It has been an exciting start to the year in Grade 1 as we dive into our learning. Students have settled beautifully into their new classrooms and are enjoying the routines and experiences that come with being in Grade 1.

Important Dates

  • Friday 20th March – Harmony Day (students may wear a touch of orange or traditional cultural dress)
  • Thursday 26th March 3.30 - 4.20pm – School Disco
  • Thursday 2nd April – Last Day of Term 1 (2:30pm finish)

Literacy

During our daily writing sessions, students have been exploring the mechanics of writing. We have been focusing on using correct boundary punctuation, particularly capital letters and full stops. Students are also learning how to “uplevel” their writing by turning simple sentences into more exciting WOW sentences.

In Reading, we have been exploring a range of character strengths through fiction texts. These stories help students understand important qualities and how they can develop and demonstrate these strengths in their own lives.

Maths

In Maths, we have been strengthening our understanding of numbers up to 20. Students have been using a variety of hands-on materials to build, represent and explore these numbers. We have also introduced a number of engaging games that help develop students’ understanding of number concepts and place value.

Integrated Studies

This term our Integrated topic is “The Best Me I Can Be.” Students have been exploring a range of character strengths that help us become kind, responsible and resilient people. Through stories, discussions and activities, students are learning ways they can demonstrate these strengths in their everyday lives.

Wellbeing

Students have enjoyed participating in our URStrong wellbeing program. We have been learning about what makes a good friend and how we can be a good friend to others. Students have also been introduced to the concept of “friendship fires” and strategies they can use to help put them out and maintain healthy friendships.
