Learning in Year 6

Year 6 Newsletter –  Highlights

Literacy

This term, Year 6 students have been revising narrative writing through the 7 Steps to Writing Success. They have focused on crafting engaging stories and editing or upleveling their work using VCOP (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers, Punctuation). The narrative unit concluded with a creative challenge, where students imagined a time machine that could travel to the past or future—producing imaginative stories full of rich detail and strong character development.

Students have also been enjoying their class novels:

  • 6A is reading Can You See Me, exploring themes of empathy, identity, and friendship.
  • 6B is reading Darius Bell and the Glitter Pool, discovering courage, curiosity, and problem-solving.

Both classes are practising a wide range of comprehension strategies, including summarising, making inferences, and reflecting on their reading to strengthen their own writing.

In mathematics, students have been learning about integers and applying them to real-world contexts such as temperature, sea level, and elevator movements. Building on this, they have been mastering the order of operations, calculating multi-step equations, and extending their learning to include exponents and indices. Students have shown great confidence in tackling these challenging problems and applying their skills in practical scenarios.

The Year 6 Leadership Badge Presentation was a truly memorable occasion. It included a welcome speech by Mrs. Hopkins, reflections from Miss Syme, Mrs. Steer, and Mr. Shattock, two short videos celebrating leadership at GRPS, and a delicious morning tea. Students were thrilled to meet Nick McGowan, MP, and to receive their leadership badges from our Principal, Mrs. Rouda. The event celebrated the students’ achievements and highlighted our values of respect, responsibility, and learning.
