Learning in Year 3

NAPLAN is currently in full swing for our Year 3 students. We are already three quarters of the way through the assessments, having completed Writing, Reading and Conventions of Language. The students have been doing an amazing job and we are incredibly proud of the effort, perseverance and positive attitudes they have shown throughout the process. It has been wonderful to see them approach each session with confidence and determination.
In Literacy, our reading and writing sessions have been centred around Dreamtime stories. Students have been using these texts for their fluency practice, focusing on reading with clear expression and an appropriate pace when reading aloud. We have also been working on identifying key information within a text and using these ideas to help us retell and rewrite a range of Dreamtime stories. These pieces will form part of our mini projects, which students will be completing towards the end of the term.
In Mathematics, we have started a new unit on Time. Students have been busy creating their own clocks and using counters to represent minutes and hours. We have also been exploring the duration of time, such as days in a week, months in a year and minutes in an hour. This hands-on approach has helped students build a stronger understanding of how time works in our everyday lives.
Aquinas Sports Program
Over the past few weeks, the Year 3 students have been fortunate to take part in the Aquinas Sports Program. Year 11 students from Aquinas College have been visiting our school to develop their leadership and coaching skills by teaching our students a range of sports, including basketball, football and netball.
The Year 3s have thoroughly enjoyed being coached by the “big kids” from across the road. It has been a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn new skills, build confidence and develop teamwork, while also forming positive connections with the older students.
