Year 5/6 News

On Tuesday, the 24th, our Year 5/6 students took part in a Writing Success Pobble Zoom session focused on strengthening their writing skills. The session supported our Year 5 students in preparing for NAPLAN writing by practising planning, structuring and writing within set time conditions. Our Year 6 students also benefited from developing their ability to write clearly and effectively under time limits. It was wonderful to see students engaged and confidently applying new strategies to their writing.

As mathematicians,  we continued our Four Operations unit with a focus on multiplication. We explored the box strategy to break apart numbers and develop a deeper understanding of place value, before applying the formal written algorithm to solve problems efficiently and accurately. We discussed how both strategies support accuracy and mathematical reasoning, and when each method might be most effective. Some of us extended our learning by applying these strategies to larger numbers and more complex problems.

As people of faith, we explored the 2026 Prayer theme of St Patrick. We reflected in our books on what it means to “walk in the footsteps of St Patrick” and how we can follow his example in our own lives. As part of this reflection, we set a personal goal for the year, focusing on something we want to grow, such as behaviour, friendship, or kindness.

Our Year 5/6 students participated in a Kids Helpline session focused on friendship and positive relationships. Through interactive discussion and activities, students explored what makes a good friend, how to communicate effectively, and ways to resolve conflicts respectfully. They reflected on their own friendships and considered strategies to support and include others. It was a great opportunity for students to build their social skills and strengthen their understanding of kindness, respect, and teamwork.
