Foundation News

This week begins our first full week of school for our Foundation students and also an addition to our morning routine with take home readers going home! The students have been excellent Self Managers in unpacking their bags and now changing their reader each morning in their green folders.
As writers, we have been learning to write about things we have seen and done. On Monday, students wrote about something they did on the weekend and drew a detailed picture to match. Later in the week, we shared things we can do well, from clapping and hopping to twirling and even clicking our tongues! After demonstrating their special skill, students used the sentence stem “I can…” to write about it, sounding out words and recording the letters and sounds they could hear, along with a detailed illustration to accompany their fantastic writing.
As Inquirers, our students have been learning about the Learning Assets of Collaborator and Communicator. We discussed what these look and sound like, and the students shared wonderful ideas. A good collaborator shares, takes turns and works as part of a team, while a good communicator speaks kindly, uses their manners and an inside voice. We then put our learning into practice through developmental play activities such as book making, puzzles, playdough letters and construction tasks. We were so impressed with how fairly and kindly our Foundations students worked together and look forward to continuing to build these important learning assets in the coming weeks.
This week we are learning to….
Reading/phonics: link the sound /t/ to the letter t and blending and segmenting three sounds
Writing: write about things we have seen or done using our letter/sound knowledge
Numeracy: make collections and match them to their digit (1-10)
Inquiry: understand what it means to be a positive collaborator and communicator
Religion: identify the symbols of prayer and how we use them
TRP: Understand how acts of kindness benefit both the giver and receiver (Empathy)
Wishing everyone a great week!
Foundation Team,
Leanne Wenckowski and Olivia Sargent
