Year 1 News

It has been another busy week of learning in Year 1, full of excitement and growth!

As readers, we have been focusing on identifying and retelling key events from a story, and sequencing them using the language First, Next, Last. We have been reading a range of texts and documenting this sequence using detailed sentences. We also began guided reading groups with a range of decodable words, sentences and passages. Some of us are focusing on decoding shorter texts and revising learnt sounds and digraphs, and others are decoding longer words and answering questions about the text read. We are learning to be self-managers and engage in targeted, independent tasks during this time, where we have been consolidating other learnt literacy skills. These include handwriting and letter formation, tricky word spelling and revision, buddy reading,  identifying verbs in stories and highlighting Colourful Semantics in sentences.

Thank you for your patience as we continue to organise home readers to align with the implementation of Initialit in Year 1 this year. They are currently being finalised and will be ready soon. In the meantime, please refer to your emails for how to incorporate reading as part of your child’s daily home learning.

As mathematicians, we continued learning about the concept of Place Value. This week, we began partitioning two-digit numbers into Tens and Ones. We focused on multiples of ten, and learnt that the 0 in these numbers means that there are no ones that make up that number, only groups of ten. Some of us learnt about numbers that had 1 or more ones. We represented and counted these numbers using materials, such as tens frames and bundling sticks, and recorded them. We have also been practising how to correctly read and record two-digit numbers. Another big focus has been counting!

Please note that in year 1, we are expected to count to 120 and back. Please practise this with your child at home.
